Client Spotlight – Amanda’s Fitness Milestones: Breaking Barriers

In today’s client spotlight, we hear from Amanda St John, whose journey at Function Fitness defies expectations and showcases the profound impact of prioritising health. Despite initial apprehensions, Amanda embarked on a path to reclaim her fitness and vitality. Within seven months, she shed an amazing 13 kilos and experienced remarkable results, marked by newfound strength and freedom from pain during daily activities like gardening.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁?
My goal when I started was to regain my fitness and reduce the amount of fat on my body – I am 53 and morbidly obese so I knew if I didn’t change something I was heading for some form of disease and my health was already suffering in terms of being able to move and being in pain.

𝗜𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀?
So far I have lost 2 stone (13 kilos) which is amazing and I feel SO much better for it. I am progressing with my workouts and each month I feel myself more able, in terms of doing fuller reps and higher weights. The real ‘bolt’ moment for me was yesterday when I was doing some gardening.  I spent all afternoon lifting, digging, dragging, planting and weeding and I did it with energy, ease and no pain. The year before I was in agony and crawling along the patio with back pain, I couldn’t lift – in fact my mother in her 70’s lifted more than I did! I couldn’t pot a large plant on my own last summer, yesterday I planted a tree on my own! It’s not the number on the scale, it’s how I feel, how I move and what I can do.

The coaches have been amazing, truly amazing, they modified my workouts when I started and gave me encouragement, guidance and instruction. I never felt judged, only that they wanted the best for me. They’ve shared in every little win and so has everyone else in the FF family – both in class and via our group page on FB.

When I began, I had PT with Charlie and attended two classes a week. Charlie taught me the fundamentals and how to avoid injury. In January, I joined classes after feeling confident. Now, Gemma coaches me on nutrition. She’s helped me develop small daily habits, avoiding overwhelming changes. These habits have led to significant improvements in my abilities, weight, skin, mood, and energy levels. Drinking water and prioritising sleep have become easier. Gym classes are essential, and with Gemma’s guidance, I’ve incorporated more steps into my daily routine for overall fitness.

𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆?
I am self-employed and work some very long hours. It’s a sedentary lifestyle, lots of driving, sitting with people in their homes and sitting at my computer in my home office. This is where I had to dig my heels in and put my health first, so the gym sessions are at 7am and nothing is allowed to get in the way of that and I now take lunches with me to maintain my nutrition.

My partner is unwell and classed as disabled, so I sometimes feel almost a guilt for leaving him behind, but, I tell myself that two of us being ill means that neither of us can be there for the other, so my fitness will hopefully help him. He follows me with my nutrition so hopefully it will have some positive changes for him too.

Mindset is another challenge, Steve in particular has been great in how he phrases things and gets me to phrase them too.  There is a massive shift in attitude when you use only positive phrases.  My fear of failure and looking foolish has lessened, but that’s because no one is negatively judging me. There are people of all ages and abilities in our gym and we all cheer each other on. It’s the total opposite to what I feared when I first walked through the front door.

𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀.
I celebrate each and every little win! The first time I got on the rower and could reach the handle – that sounds daft to me now but when I started I was so stiff and unable to bend or stretch, I would have to grab that handle before I put my feet in the straps. 

The first time I lifted a weight and every increase since, every time I level up on a workout, the milestones of weight loss, working my way out of the yellow band and remaining firmly in orange, then yesterday that bolt of being able to do so much more than I could this time last year in the garden!

My plantar fasciitis has completely gone and when I had that it was agony, that’s part weight loss and part exercise and stretches. I’ve also noticed my back doesn’t lock up on me like it used to – it will still twinges occasionally but I don’t hobble around the house like an old woman! 

I had the courage and was heavily encouraged to join in with the games – which is SO far out of my comfort zone I can’t tell you, but it’s been great – everyone is lovely and I am having a good time.

Even as a child I decided I hate running and it’s really only because of a fear of failure. Whenever there was a run in a workout I would make up an excuse not to, but now I have a go, I’ve just downloaded the couch to 5K app and have decided that I can run, and that the only way to get over my mental block is to get out there and start running – and like everything else, I will suck at it to start with, but, I will get better. One of the ladies in class has said as soon as I get to the 5K she wants to come on a celebration run with me.  I share a lot with my class, more than I ever thought I would.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀?
My future goals are to keep doing what I am doing, prioritising my health and wellbeing, keep the gym classes and stick with the nutrition coaching for a while longer as that is really helping. I have no idea of what number I want on the scale or what size clothes I want to be in. What I want is to be fit and healthy, to improve my flexibility and open up my upper spine which is my bug-bear at the moment, oh and get over this fear/dread of running.

To anyone thinking about joining. I get how intimidating it is, but I promise you, no one judges you, no one is staring at you – everyone works at their own pace and everyone celebrates each and every win together. The coaches are great, the people at the gym are like a family and we have every age and ability there. It’s the best thing you can do for yourself.
